How to study the Bible: a simple guide for beginners
You do not need a theology degree or a shelf of commentaries to study the Bible. You need a readable translation, a regular time and a few good questions.
1. Pick a place to start
- Mark is short and fast-moving, a good first Gospel.
- Psalms are prayers, useful when you want to read and pray at the same time.
- James is practical and only five chapters long.
Read a whole book from start to finish rather than jumping around. You will see how each part fits.
2. Ask three questions of every passage
- Observe: what does it say? Who, what, where, when. Look for repeated words, commands, promises and contrasts.
- Interpret: what did it mean to the first readers? Read the verses around it. Check a cross-reference if your Bible has them.
- Apply: what does it mean for me now? Is there something to believe, to do, to stop doing, or to thank God for?

Observe
- Who is speaking, and who is listening?
- Where and when is this happening?
- Which words or ideas are repeated?
- Is there a command, a promise or a warning?
- What is the main point in one sentence?
Interpret
- What happened just before this passage?
- What would this have meant to the first readers?
- Is there a word I should look up?
- Does another part of the Bible help explain it?
- What does this show about God?
Apply
- What is one thing I want to remember?
- Is there something to do, or to stop doing?
- Who could I share this with?
- What do I want to pray about after reading this?
- What question do I still have?
3. Keep it small and regular
Fifteen minutes most days works better than an hour once a month. Keep a notebook, date each entry and write down your questions. Some will be answered as you keep reading; bring the others to a church leader or study group.
