Advent wreath readings 2026: candle readings for families

An Advent wreath is a simple circle of greenery with four candles, and often a fifth white candle in the center for Christmas. Parents light one more candle each Sunday of Advent, then read a short verse and say a short prayer together.

Advent 2026 begins on Sunday, November 29. The four Sundays fall on November 29 and December 6, 13 and 20. Christmas Day is Friday, December 25. Below are Advent candle readings for families on those dates, plus a Christ candle reading for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. This guide is for parents and caregivers to lead. Keep candles supervised.

What an Advent wreath is for

The evergreen circle points to life that does not run out. The growing light of the candles points to the coming of Christ. Many churches use three purple or blue candles and one rose or pink candle for the Third Sunday (often called Joy Sunday). Some families add a white center candle for Christmas. Colors and names vary. If your church has its own pattern, follow that and still use these readings if they help.

Keep it small. Light the candles for the weeks so far, plus the new one. Read one verse. Say one short line together. Ten minutes is enough. On a busy night, the light and one sentence of prayer still count.

Before the first Sunday

Sunday, November 29, 2026: Hope

Light the first candle. Many churches call this the Hope candle and use purple or blue.

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13, WEB British Edition)

Say together: We light this candle for hope. God keeps his promises, so we can wait with hope.

Ask: What are we hoping for this Advent, beyond gifts under the tree?

Sunday, December 6, 2026: Peace

Light two candles. Many churches call the second candle Peace.

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.” (John 14:27, WEB British Edition)

Say together: We light this candle for peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and he gives a peace the world cannot give.

Ask: Where do we need peace at home this week?

Sunday, December 13, 2026: Joy

Light three candles. In many churches this is the joyful Sunday, often marked with a rose or pink candle.

“Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”” (Philippians 4:4, WEB British Edition)

Say together: We light this candle for joy. The good news of Jesus is for everyone.

Ask: What is one good thing from this week we can name out loud?

Sunday, December 20, 2026: Love

Light four candles. Many churches call the fourth candle Love.

“By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his only born Son into the world that we might live through him.” (1 John 4:9, WEB British Edition)

Say together: We light this candle for love. God showed his love by sending his Son.

Ask: Who can we show love to this week in a small, practical way?

Christmas Eve or Christmas Day 2026: Christ

Light all four Advent candles and, if you have one, the white center candle for Christ.

“Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”” (John 8:12, WEB British Edition)

Say together: We light the center candle for Jesus, the light of the world. He has come.

If you keep a nativity set, place the baby in the manger, then read Luke 2:1-20 from your own Bible.

A verse for the whole season

If you want one line to come back to every time you light the wreath:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.” (John 1:5, WEB British Edition)

Write it on a card by the candles. Read it on the Sundays above, or on any midweek evening when you want a two-minute pause.

Candle readings and daily Advent reading

Sunday candle readings hold the shape of Advent. Daily readings fill the weekdays. Parents who want both can light the wreath on the four Sundays, then use a short plan from December 1 to Christmas Day. Our printable Advent 2026 Family Devotional includes the Sunday candle guide on one page, plus a daily page with a passage, a key verse, a short reflection, two talk-together questions, a prayer and an optional small activity.

You do not have to do both. Some households only keep the Sundays. Others only keep a daily reading. Either pattern is fine. The point is a steady, parent-led pause, not a perfect record.

Tips for mixed ages and busy weeks

For adult households

Couples, housemates and adult families can use the same candle readings without changing a word. Keep a shared notebook by the wreath and write one line each Sunday. Text the Sunday verse to a friend who lives alone. On Christmas Eve, read John 1:1-14 slowly by candlelight.

Printable Advent candle readings for families

If you want the Sunday readings on one printable page, with December daily pages ready after that, the Advent 2026 Family Devotional includes the candle guide dated for Advent 2026, 25 daily pages from December 1 to Christmas Day, a bonus Epiphany page for January 6, 2027, and 26 verse cards. Scripture on the pages is from the World English Bible, British Edition. Passages to read from your own Bible are given as references.
